Iron Hill, Newark, Delaware

It's the number one course in Delaware, and definitely one of the top courses in the mid-Atlantic.

Iron Hill is one hell of a disc golf course. Today is the first time I shot Iron Hill. It's a tough but fair disc golf course.

I did what I normally do when I try a new course. I played the short tees. The white teepads at Iron Hill were in OK shape. There is at least one hole where the white pad is dirt - mud when I was there. I think that was hole 7.

After shooting 18 holes, I clocked a +13 score playing white to the silver baskets.

Some of the holes seem kind of the same, dogleg to the right, but there are some hard ass holes on this course.

Even short holes are made tricky with elevated baskets, like hole 7 at 160 feet. I missed my teeshot on 7, but I got here on my upshot for a stress free par.

Shooting +13 wasn't amazing. I dropped at least 4 points missing my early 20-footers. My putting came around, but it didn't help me on 13 and 17.

On 17, I drilled an early tree right off the tee. It took several shots to even get back to the fairway. By then, I was shooting my 5th from 120 feet, and I missed my putt.

For 13, I feel like I should have shot the entire hole again. That silver basket is insane.

I'm not sure playing 13 again would have resulted in a better score - I just want to play it again. That's how I felt when I left. I almost wanted to immediately play the yellow tees to the yellow baskets - long to long.

I made note of what the yellow to yellow holes looked like when I was playing the whites. It's literally a different course. When I go back, I'm definitely going long to long.

If you're old like me, watch where you're walking at Iron Hill. It is very rocky all over the fairways. I do appreciate a course that takes me back to my truck at hole 9.

Iron Hill is a very challenging course in which every hole is gettable, but shots need to be made to get them.

I'd love to play an amateur tournament at Iron Hill this year. The pros are going to be there in June for the The Birdie Open presented by Gatekeeper Media. I wouldn't drive to Delaware to watch a disc golf tournament, but I will be going back to play Iron Hill for casual or tournament play.

Directions

I drove to Iron Hill from Maryland. I took 95 the entire way. Don't follow the GPS to find the disc golf course. GPS will run you down a dead-end one-lane road.

The road you don't want to right onto is Iron Hill Road. Go past Iron Hill Road and you'll find the park entrance at the next turn.

Iron Hill is located near University of Delaware. It was built in 2008.
