In an Age of Tens of Thousands of Photos on Your Phone, a New App Bets That 24 Shots Is Enough
Bosco, a digital disposable camera that mails you real prints, is now available only on the Apple App Store.
Open the photo gallery app on your phone. Scroll up. Keep scrolling. There are thousands of pictures in there you'll never look at again — meals, screenshots, blurry dogs, the same sunset four times. Bosco, a new iPhone app released recently by independent studio Nuthatch, LLC, is built on the unfashionable hunch that this isn't what photography is supposed to feel like.
There was a time when taking a picture meant something. You had 24 shots, maybe 36. You framed carefully. You waited until just the right moment to snap it. And when the prints came back from the drugstore in that paper envelope, you flipped through them on the car ride home — surprised, delighted, sometimes disappointed. Bosco is that feeling, in your pocket.
How it works
Pick a roll — 12, 24, or 36 shots. That's all you get. Every frame is shot through a selectable film look — grain, color, the soft imperfection of analog — baked in at the moment you press the shutter, not slapped on after the fact. The filters are pure retro: faded Kodachrome warmth, washed-out drugstore color, high-contrast black and white, the green cast of expired stock. The look lives in the photo, not in a tray of edits you'll never apply.
When the roll is finished, Bosco prints it. The whole thing. Every shot you took, on real C-Type Silver Halide photo paper, mailed to your door — the way you used to get prints back from the photo lab. You see a proof sheet on your phone the way photographers have reviewed their rolls for a century, but the prints in your mailbox are the actual product. There is no in-app gallery, no infinite scroll, no save-to-camera-roll. By design.
It's the shoebox under your bed. The album on the coffee table. The picture on the fridge.
A small ritual, on purpose
Bosco is slow photography, on purpose. A roll you finish over a weekend, a vacation, a season. A stack of prints you actually hold. For users who want to revisit a roll later, an optional $0.99-per-roll archive service enables reprints months or years down the line. Everyone else just gets the prints — and that's the point.
— Keith Vance, CTO, Nuthatch, LLC"Your phone's photo gallery has thousands of pictures you'll never look at again. Bosco is the opposite of that."
"We didn't build this to be another camera app. We built it because we missed the feeling of finishing a roll, dropping it off, and waiting a week to see what we actually shot. Constraints made us better photographers. The prints made the photos matter."
Pricing and availability
Bosco is free to download on the Apple App Store today. Rolls are priced from $7.99 to $12.99 depending on shot count and print size (3.5×5", 4×6", 4×4", 5×5", and 6×6"), with flat $4.99 shipping. The optional roll archive — for ordering reprints later — is $0.99 per roll.
